"Managerial Training Already Reaping Dividends"
Twenty-two managers from Hong Kong and Korea have received in depth managerial training focusing on the elements of successful leadership, communications and team-building. The TES Managerial Leadership e = mc2 Training (MLT) sessions were conducted by TES trainer William Niggli.
 Eric Wong, Charmilles Sales Manager, Hong Kong "The training was so good that I would like to have a third day added so that we could do some more brainstorming among the participants."
The two-day, 16-hour courses took place Oct. 17-18 in Kowloon, Hong Kong, and Oct. 20-21 in Kwang Myong-Si, Gyeonggi-Do, Korea. Based on feedback from earlier customer-oriented training for service technicians, the MLT sessions focused on:
- Understanding and applying elements of emotional intelligence and successful leadership, by building trust and recognizing and applying leadership skills;
- Cultivating the key characteristics, components and purposes of communication, including learning to recognize barriers to effective communication and improving active listening; and,
- Understanding the dynamics of team-building, by understanding the important roles each team member plays and improving team members ability to take part in team work.
For S.M. Kim, controller with Agie Charmilles Korea Co., Ltd., the training came at a good time.
"I joined the company just three months ago, so this course was quite valuable for me as a new employee, because it helped me understand what is expected of managers and how I can be a good manager," said Kim, who was among 11 managers participating in the sessions in Korea.
"One thing that really impressed me was a point that Niggli made:" "Don't try to motivate your staff. Just try not to de-motivate your staff."
This says that the little things that we do as managers can mean a lot to our staff. Communication is very important part of being a good manager, and we always should take into consideration the concerns of our staff. In the long-term, we all benefit from good listening and communication, he said.
Lisa Pang, Consumables Manager with Agie Charmilles China (Hong Kong) for the past seven years, values the MLT techniques for cultivating better communication with her colleagues. She was one of 11 managers taking part in the MLT module in Hong Kong.
"This training shows how we can develop trust for better communication," said Pang. "It was valuable for me to be able to sit with colleagues at the sessions and exchange experiences and concerns, and hear how others have solved problems. When I can help a colleague solve a problem, that person becomes willing to help me solve my problems. Through two-way communication, we can make things happen and achieve our goals."
MLT techniques already have had a positive impact on Pang and her colleagues.
"For example, we had an Open House Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 in our Chang An office, and by communicating in a better way and with full teamwork, 14 machines were sold during the two day event;" said Pang. "That's all because of better team work."
